📖 Stage Description

Bayonne, at the confluence of the Nive and the Adour, is the official starting point of the Camino del Norte on the French side. The Gothic Sainte-Marie cathedral, the narrow lanes of Grand Bayonne and the Vauban ramparts set the tone for a city steeped in history.

The path then follows the Basque Coast as closely as possible — red sandstone cliffs plunging into the Atlantic, sandy coves and villages of red-and-green half-timbered houses. Bidart and Guéthary, two gems of the Labourd region, punctuate this first luminous day.

Saint-Jean-de-Luz concludes the stage: a historic fishing port famous for the marriage of Louis XIV in 1660, a wide fine-sand beach, and the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste. A rewarding arrival at the end of every step.
