📖 Stage Description
This long stage crosses the hills south of Porto, passing through residential areas and patches of surviving woodland before the descent begins toward the Porto metropolitan area. The terrain alternates between plateaux and valleys, with one fine climb before the final drop to the banks of the Douro.
The approach to Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank of the Douro directly opposite Porto, delivers the first spectacular views of the city. The famous Port wine lodges cascade down the hillside above Gaia.
Porto, Portugal's second city and the soul of northern Portuguese culture, deserves at least an extra half-day. The Ribeira waterfront, the Torre dos Clérigos, the Lello bookshop, the Dom Luís I bridge — an incomparably rich city.
