📖 Stage Description
Oviedo, the historic capital of Asturias, is home to a Gothic cathedral and the pre-Romanesque churches of Alfonso II, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is where the Camino Primitivo — the oldest of all the Camino routes — begins.
The path first descends toward the Nalón river before climbing back through Asturian meadows and hamlets, a landscape dotted with maize fields and hórreos — the traditional raised granaries perched on stone pillars.
Grado, a lively market town known for its weekly fair, welcomes the pilgrim after 24 km amid rolling green hills. A moderate stage, ideal for acclimatising to the mild, damp beauty of Asturias.
