Leaving Grado behind, the path enters a quintessentially Asturian bocage landscape: lush hedgerows, fat meadows, and forests of oak and chestnut. Hórreos — the distinctive raised granaries — mark every hamlet, silent witnesses to centuries of farming tradition.
The gradual climb toward the first Cantabrian ridges opens up sweeping views over the Asturian countryside. The atmosphere is deeply rural and unhurried, far from the crowds — which is precisely what gives the Primitivo its special character.
Salas, a historic market town, preserves a medieval tower-castle and a 16th-century collegiate church. A fine introduction to the authentic spirit of this ancient route.
