📖 Stage Description
The final stage of the Via de la Plata. From Valcabado, the route passes through La Bañeza (km 13), a lively market town with all amenities, before continuing northwest through the Maragatería — a region where old traditions have been remarkably well preserved.
The approach to Astorga is magnificent: the silhouette of the Gothic cathedral and Gaudí's neo-Gothic Bishop's Palace rise on the hillside ahead. It is a triumphant arrival after 706 km.
Astorga is the meeting point with the Camino Francés. The cathedral (15th–18th century) and the Palacio Episcopal designed by Antoni Gaudí in 1889 are the two jewels of the city.
