📖 Stage Description

Notre-Dame Cathedral of Le Puy-en-Velay is one of the great emotional highpoints of the camino. You leave this Romanesque masterpiece through the cobbled lanes of the old town — rue des Tables, rue Raphaël — before reaching the Place du Plot, the historic crossroads where all the routes converge. This is where the GR®65 officially begins, marked in red and white.

The exit from Le Puy is demanding from the first step: a sustained climb of nearly 400 metres over a few kilometres through fields of Velay green lentils, with 360° views back over the city and its famous volcanic pinnacles (Rocher Saint-Michel, Rocher Corneille). The pace is set. Legs warm up. The pilgrimage truly begins.

After Saint-Christophe-sur-Dolaison (km 9), the path climbs toward the Margeride plateau through woodland and meadows. The landscape opens onto sweeping panoramas — on a clear day you can glimpse Mont Mézenc in the distance. The light of Haute-Loire has something particular about it, a shifting play of deep greens and ochre earth.

At Montbonnet (km 16), the hamlet perched at 1,100 m offers a welcome rest. The final kilometres descend gently toward Saint-Privat-d'Allier, a medieval village clinging to its basalt spur above the nascent gorges of the Allier. The view of the Saint-Jacques de Rochegude chapel is unforgettable.
