📖 Stage Description
You walk from Golinhac through the woods, descend toward the valley of the Dourdou, and then — around a bend in the path — Conques is there. Complete. The medieval village in its green amphitheatre, the towers of the abbey church pointing above the slate rooftops. It is one of those moments you never forget.
The abbey church of Sainte-Foy dates from the 11th century. Its tympanum of the Last Judgement, with 124 sculpted figures, is one of the finest works of Romanesque art. You can spend an hour deciphering its details — the damned piled into hell on the right, the serene elect on the left, Christ in majesty at the centre. Medieval art was not decorative: it had something to say.
Spend the night in Conques if you can. The village empties after 6pm, the tour buses have gone, and the lanes take on their true character. That is when you understand why medieval pilgrims walked hundreds of kilometres to come here.
This stage crosses the Aveyron region over 16.8 km with 350 m of ascent. Main villages: Sénergues (km 5, 650m), Noailhac (km 12, 600m), Moulin de Cambelong (km 18, 310m).
