The trail leaves the Bagnères thermal baths to reach Lourdes through the Bigorre hills, descending gradually to the Gave de Pau. The arrival in this Marian city — the second most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world with nearly six million visitors a year — is always a striking moment, whatever the walker’s faith. The underground Basilica of Saint Pius X, the Massabielle sanctuary and the medieval castle together form a unique ensemble.
