📖 Stage Description

Arles, a Roman and Greek city founded in the 6th century BC, opens the Via Tolosana in magnificent fashion. Its amphitheatre and ancient theatre, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, set the tone for an exceptional cultural heritage. Van Gogh stayed here in 1888 and painted some of his most celebrated works.

The path leaves Arles along the banks of the Rhône, then crosses the marshes and rice paddies of the Petite Camargue — a world apart, balanced between sky and water. Saint-Gilles-du-Gard brings the stage to a close: its 12th-century Romanesque abbey church, with its triple sculpted portal listed as a UNESCO masterpiece of medieval sculpture, is one of the great artistic treasures of southern France. A flat and easy stage.
