📖 Stage Description

The path crosses the last hills of the Gers before entering the Hautes-Pyrénées. The route descends toward the plain of the Adour, a wide river whose meanders irrigate the Bigorre plain. The Pyrenees reveal themselves in the distance — a blue line of snow-capped summits, snow-covered for most of the year.

Maubourguet, a Hautes-Pyrénées market town on the banks of the Adour, is the first Bigorre outpost. Its weekly market and wine cellars — the region produces Madiran, a tannic AOC wine from Bigorre — make it a pleasant stop. The fertile Adour plain, rich in maize and livestock farming, contrasts sharply with the Gascon hillsides just left behind.
