📖 Stage Description
The final French stage of the Via Tolosana climbs toward the Col du Somport (1,632 m), the historic Pyrenean pass used by Compostela pilgrims since the 11th century. The ascent from Bedous is long but steady, through beech and fir forests and then high-altitude moorland.
Urdos, a mountain hamlet at the foot of the Somport, is the last inhabited place before the Spanish border. Thick-fleeced Béarnais sheep graze freely on the summer pastures. On the Spanish side, the Col du Somport opens onto the Canfranc valley — and the Camino Aragonés toward Jaca and Pamplona. A physically demanding stage, but one charged with deep emotion for every pilgrim.
