📖 Stage Description

The path enters the Vallée d'Aspe, one of the three Pyrenean passes into Spain alongside Roncevaux and the Somport. The Gave d'Aspe, a torrent of glacial water, accompanies the route throughout the stage as the valley grows increasingly narrow and enclosed. The limestone walls close in gradually.

The Vallée d'Aspe is a haven of biodiversity: brown bears, griffon vultures, chamois and golden eagles inhabit these protected slopes. The convent of Notre-Dame-de-Sarrance, a place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages, merits a spiritual pause. Bedous, the last sizeable village in the Aspe valley, offers accommodation and services before the final ascent to the Col du Somport.
