📖 Stage Description
Ferrol, a maritime city and military arsenal of the Spanish Crown, is the northern starting point of the Camino Inglés from Galicia. The path begins along the Ría de Ferrol, one of Galicia's most beautiful estuaries, hugging the shore before climbing into the green hills. The Arsenal de Ferrol, a listed national monument, stands as testimony to this fortress city's glorious past.
The stage passes through Neda, a quiet town nestled at the head of the ría, then through Fene and the peaceful Galician hamlets of granite and slate. Hórreos (raised stone grain stores on stilts) line the shaded sunken lanes typical of wet Galicia. The vegetation is lush — oaks, ferns, broom.
Pontedeume, founded in the 14th century under the protection of the counts of Andrade, welcomes pilgrims with its arcaded medieval old town. The Torre de Andrade dominates the main square, and the medieval bridge over the Eume offers magnificent views over the ría. A long first stage, but rich in scenery and history.
