📖 Stage Description

Getaria (km 5) is a gem: a small medieval fishing port, birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elcano (the first circumnavigator of the globe) and of fashion designer Balenciaga. The local txakoli — a dry, lightly sparkling white wine — is an absolute must-try.

The coastline between Getaria and Zumaia offers one of the most impressive geological spectacles in Europe: the Zumaia flysch. These 50-million-year-old sedimentary layers, tilted to 90°, form an open page in the history of the Earth. The beach of Itzurun is spectacular.

Deba closes the stage in an atmosphere of authentic Basque village life, with its 15th-century Gothic church and its harbour on the estuary.
