📖 Stage Description

The path continues through the Basque interior, between verdant valleys and granite hamlets. The landscape has barely changed in centuries: caseríos with deep eaves, the crack of pelota balls on frontons, fir and oak trees intertwined.

The approach to Gernika (Guernica) through the hills is deeply moving. On 26 April 1937, the Nazi Condor Legion bombed this city, a symbol of the Basque people, inspiring Picasso's famous painting. Today the town has been rebuilt; the ancient Oak of Gernika — symbol of Basque freedom — still stands before the Casa de Juntas.
