Leaving Pontevedra, the path draws away from the city through quintessentially Galician countryside — small maize plots, meadows enclosed by granite walls, picturesque villages with their raised stone granaries. This is deep Galicia, barely changed over the centuries.

The stage is pleasant and varied, with oak and eucalyptus forests alternating with farmland. Cruceiros line the path at intervals, silent witnesses to the region's deep Catholic faith.

Caldas de Reis has been a spa town since Roman times and boasts the unusual feature of hot spring fountains right in the town centre. The public thermal baths are the ideal reward for a pilgrim's weary feet.
