📖 Stage Description

This penultimate stage descends toward the valley of the Ulla through Galician bocage and forests. The atmosphere gradually changes — more and more pilgrims converge on these final leagues, and cruceiros (wayside crosses) become ever more frequent.

The passage through Catoira, with its 11th-century Romanesque Torres do Oeste standing on the banks of the Ulla, is a memorable moment. These ruins bear witness to the wars against the Vikings who ravaged the Galician coast.

Padrón is the legendary place where the boat carrying the body of the Apostle Saint James is said to have landed after his martyrdom in Judea. The church of Santiago and the mooring stone (piedra) of the boat are venerated by pilgrims. The town is also famous for its padrón peppers and the novelist Rosalía de Castro.
