📖 Stage Description
Leaving Santarém, the path turns away from the Tagus for good and heads northeast, climbing steadily into the limestone hills that herald the Serra d'Aire e Candeeiros. The landscape changes dramatically: olive trees, cork oaks and Mediterranean scrub replace the Ribatejo vineyards.
This is a long and demanding stage with repeated ascents and descents through karst terrain. Villages are few and water points are spread far apart — carry enough water before you set out.
Alcanena, tucked in a valley, is known for its leather industry. The town has an albergue and all the services needed for this important rest stop before the mountain stages leading to Fátima.
