📖 Stage Description
This final stage before Coimbra descends gradually through orchards and market gardens typical of the Coimbra countryside. The path offers beautiful views over the Mondego valley and the silhouette of the university city perched on its hill.
As you approach Coimbra, the camino passes through residential neighbourhoods before reaching the banks of the Mondego, which it follows all the way to the historic centre. The first notes of Coimbra fado drift through the lanes of the Baixa.
Coimbra, founded by the Romans as Aeminium, is the intellectual capital of Portugal. Its university founded in 1290 (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), its Romanesque cathedral, the Museu Machado de Castro and the unique student atmosphere make this an unmissable stop.
