The stage crosses the lower Ariège through the alluvial plain of the Hers-Vif, a capricious river once feared for its flooding. The landscape opens up to the first Pyrenean silhouettes. Pamiers, a cathedral city founded in the 7th century and enriched by its medieval bishopric, once welcomed King James II of Aragon on his pilgrimage to Compostela. Its Cathedral of Saint-Antonin, flanked by an imposing pink-brick bell tower, dominates the city.
