📖 Stage Description

The path crosses the Lauragais, an agricultural plain at the heart of the Pays d'Oc. The route at times follows the Canal du Midi, the exceptional waterway conceived by Pierre-Paul Riquet in the 17th century and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The century-old plane trees lining its banks form a spectacular green tunnel overhead.

Montferrand, a farming village of the Lauragais, is a modest but characteristic waypoint in this land of wide horizons and winds. Windmills — here called "capitelles" — once dotted these hills. Woad, the blue dye plant that made the fortune of Toulouse in the 16th century, was cultivated in these very fields.
