This stage draws close to Montpellier, capital of Languedoc and France's eighth-largest city. The path crosses the peri-urban outskirts of the Montpellier conurbation, threading between vineyards, retail zones and residential suburbs. Entering the city through the Antigone district is a striking architectural experience.

Montpellier rewards a leisurely stop: the place de la Comédie and its Opera House, the stately place de la Canourgue, the triumphal arch and the Peyrou promenade, the medieval alleyways of the old Écusson quarter, and the famous faculty of medicine — one of the oldest in Europe, founded in the 12th century. A university city buzzing with modern, cosmopolitan energy.
