📖 Stage Description

The route penetrates the heart of the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc, one of the best-preserved natural areas in southern France. The path follows the gorges of the Mare, a fast-flowing river cutting between walls of gneiss and basalt.

The Espinouse forest — beech and fir at altitude — wraps the route in welcome coolness. Springs and waterfalls punctuate the way. Saint-Gervais-sur-Mare, a slate-roofed mountain village, has a remarkable Romanesque church and schist houses typical of this terroir. The contrast with the Mediterranean garrigue of the early stages could not be greater.
