📖 Stage Description

San Vicente de la Barquera (km 8) is one of the finest coastal villages in Cantabria: a medieval castle commanding the ría, a Gothic bridge with 28 arches spanning the estuary, and sweeping crescent beaches. One of the great highlights of the camino.

Beyond San Vicente, the path follows the last kilometres of the Cantabrian coast before crossing into Asturias. The landscape shifts almost imperceptibly — the white limestone houses give way to the darker dressed stone typical of Asturian villages.

Colombres is the first Asturian village — and what a village. Its grand Indiano villas, built by emigrants who made their fortunes in Mexico and Cuba and returned to erect palaces in their homeland, speak of a prosperous and cosmopolitan past.
