📖 Stage Description

The stage from Gijón to Avilés crosses Asturias's industrial coastline — a historical reality of this mining and steel region that need not put pilgrims off. The Niemeyer Centre in Avilés, designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer at the age of 102, is an unexpected reward at the end of the stage.

The path follows the shore past beaches like Salinas — a long, fine-sand beach with a promenade — before reaching Avilés through its outskirts.

Avilés is a city of contrasts: its medieval and Baroque historic centre is one of the finest in northern Spain, with magnificent arcades and palaces, ringed by an industrial periphery. The restoration of the old town has been a remarkable success.
